Kolkata : Senior Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee on Thursday said the Trinamool would win 250 seats in the next assembly elections if the central government makes the mistake of imposing President’s rule in West Bengal. The Trinamool Congress general secretary criticized the central government on the issue of inflation and said that the BJP is serving its political interest by making films tax-free.

Abhishek Banerjee, Lok Sabha member from Diamond Harbor, was campaigning in favor of TMC candidate Babul Supriyo in the by-election from Ballygunge assembly constituency. During this, he said, ‘BJP wants to impose President’s rule in West Bengal. I tell them to go ahead. Despite his campaign during the 2021 assembly elections, we won 213 seats.

Demand for imposition of President’s rule after Birbhum incident
“If they dare to impose President’s rule and elections are held again, we will win 250 seats,” Banerjee said. This is my challenge. His statement comes in the backdrop of several BJP leaders demanding imposition of President’s rule in the state after the Birbhum killings.

‘The situation is serious from inflation to violence against women’
The Mamata Banerjee-led TMC returned to power for the third time in a row, winning 213 seats. In contrast, despite its high-pitched campaign, the BJP managed to win only 77 seats in the 294-member House. Abhishek Banerjee said, ‘Look at the current situation in the country. From inflation to violence against women, the situation is dire. In 2019, the cost of one liter of petrol was Rs 75, now it costs Rs 115.

‘If you lose the election in Bengal, then reduce the price, increase it as soon as you win UP’
“When BJP lost the West Bengal election, it reduced the price of petrol by Rs 5, but when it won the Uttar Pradesh election, petrol prices increased 15 times in the last 13 days. Diesel prices are also increasing rapidly. Showing insensitivity, has increased the prices of life saving drugs, while on the other hand the BJP is waiving tax on films to fulfill its ‘political interests’.

‘Won’t be scared like Congress and Left parties’
Banerjee said the TMC would contest elections in Tripura and Meghalaya next year and would expand to other states as well. Noting that he has been summoned several times by central agencies, he said such threats will not deter him from working for the public. We will not succumb to threats, unlike the Left and Congress. Not a day goes by when Congress leader in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury does not attack Mamata Banerjee. LoP, Suvendu officers in West Bengal are also doing the same.

‘…then India will have a fate like Sri Lanka’
Speaking on the Sri Lanka crisis, he said that India has also taken huge debt in the last seven years of BJP rule. Sri Lanka is in an emergency situation as it has taken a huge debt. The situation in India is also not good as the BJP government has increased the debt burden since it came to power in 2014.
