Australian Open 2022: Ashleigh Barty became the first Australian to reach the Australian Open after 42 years; defeated Keys in a one-sided match

Ashleigh Barty ended the host nation’s long wait by defeating unseeded Madison Keys in the final of the Australian Open tennis tournament and is now eyeing to end yet another drought. Barty defeated Keys 6-1, 6-3 in a one-sided match in the semi-finals.

Barty is the first Australian female player since Wendy Turnbull in 1980 to reach the final of her domestic Grand Slam tournament. No player from Australia has won the Australian Open title since Chris O’Neill in 1978.

Top-ranked Barty lost just 17 games during her journey to the semi-finals and she once again dominated against 2017 US Open runner-up Keys.

Barty hit five s in the match and cashed in four of the six break points. Keys got two break opportunities but could not take advantage of them. Barty has won titles on grassy courts at Wimbledon and clay courts at the French Open and is one win away from winning the title on hard courts.
