Chennai. With the onset of Northeast Monsoon in the state, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) seems to be tightening up. The corporation has directed all the zones to take strict action against those who illegally allow sewage into stormwater drains (SWD). According to a circular issued by Corporation Commissioner Gagandeep Singh Bedi, zonal officers have been directed to connect illegal sewer connections with drains and issue notices to impose fines on those doing so.

According to the circular, Bedi had inspected stormwater drain works in Royapuram and Tandiarpet zones on September 9. During the inspection several illegal sewage outlets were found from the adjoining premises. As per the amendment to the Chennai City Municipal Corporation Act 1919, fines are imposed against those who allow sewage into stormwater drains. This amendment was made in the year 2017 and the amendment empowers the zonal officers to impose fines ranging from Rs 5 thousand to Rs 2 lakh depending on the type of buildings.

However, the civic body failed to plug the sewer lines on a large scale with storm water drains, resulting in overflow and flooding during rains. A few years back, various measures were taken to identify illegal sewer connections, a corporation official said. Illegal sewer connections were removed at some places and rainwater from rainwater drains was allowed to flow into lakes.
