In Agra district, six candidates filed nominations for the assembly elections.

Agra, Jan 17 (PTI) A total of six candidates, including two from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), one each from the Congress and the Samajwadi Party (SP), filed their nominations for the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections in Agra district. A transgender candidate was also among those who filed the nominations. The election officer gave this information.

Apart from BJP, SP and Congress, two candidates are independent, the official said. Monday is the third day for filing nominations for the first phase of the seven-phase state assembly elections.

The BJP candidates who filed their nominations include Chaudhary Babu Lal from Fatehpur Sikri and Dharampal Singh from Etmadpur, he said. Chaudhary has been a two-time MLA and one-time MP.

Dharampal Singh, a former BSP MLA, had joined the BJP on January 12 after differences with the SP.

BJP workers protested after both the leaders were given party tickets.

SP candidate from Bah seat Madhusudan Sharma is among those who have filed nominations. Sharma has also been a BSP MLA and is currently the District President of the Agra unit of SP.

Others who have filed nomination papers include Vinod Bansal of Congress (from Agra North). Apart from these, Arun Kant Katheria from Agra Rural and Akash Soni from Agra Cantonment have filled the form, who are transgender.

Soni, popularly known as Radhika Bai, said after filing her nomination, “The purpose of contesting the election is that I want to do a lot for the people of the ‘Kinnar’ community. We have been neglected by the society. I belong to my community.” I will educate people that there is more to it than dancing on the streets and begging.

Soni said, “We too can lead a respectable life in the society by educating ourselves.”
