The matter escalated so much that three students thrashed him fiercely. The student had serious head injuries. He underwent surgery at Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital but doctors could not save him. Police have arrested three students of Pallakkal Pothukkudi Government Higher Secondary School near Ambasamudram on charges of murder.

According to his mother’s statement in the FIR, the student, Selva Surya, had an altercation with three other students on April 25, who questioned him for wearing a colored thread on his wrist to indicate his caste. According to the police, the victim and one of the accused pelted stones at each other and the fight escalated after the boy suffered a head injury. He was admitted to the hospital on the evening of 25 April and died on Saturday (30 April).

Tension spread in the area after death
Since Selva Surya and the accused belong to different castes and religions, heavy police deployment has been made in Pappakudi and Pallakkal Pothukkudi villages, where tension prevails. Tirunelveli district superintendent of police P Saravanan said the accused have been kept in a protection home for children violating the law in Tirunelveli. The SP said that the situation is under control.

Collector V Vishnu asked the heads of educational institutions to constitute school advisory committees to strictly implement the norms laid down by the school education department with regard to removal of casteist wrist bands and other measures to put an end to such incidents.
