Take a pledge to protect the federal feature of the Constitution on Republic Day: Mamata Banerjee

Kolkata, Jan 26 (PTI) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday greeted the countrymen on the 73rd Republic Day and urged them to take a pledge to protect the basic structure of the Constitution and especially its federal feature.

He saluted the freedom fighters and jawans who laid down their lives to protect the country and ensure the safety of the citizens.

The Trinamool Congress chief called upon the country to protect, preserve and follow the ideals of justice, liberty, equality and fraternity. He described these as pillars of Indian democracy.

He tweeted, “Wishing everyone a very Happy Republic Day. On this day, let us once again pledge to protect the basic structure of the Indian Constitution and in particular its federal feature.

“Let us try to protect, preserve and follow the ideals of justice, liberty, equality and fraternity enshrined in our Constitution,” Banerjee said.

She said, “I salute all the freedom fighters and jawans, whose sacrifice and selfless service keep our country safe. My heartiest congratulations to all the countrymen who are the pillars of our democracy. Jai Hind.”

On the occasion of Republic Day, a brief program was organized at Kolkata’s Red Road in which Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Speaker Biman Banerjee attended.
