The voting process for GTS began at 7 am and is expected to end by 4 pm, while the polling in Siliguri will continue till 5 pm, he said.
Elections for the ‘GTA’, the semi-autonomous council that governs the Darjeeling Hills, are being held after a decade of changes in the political dynamics of the region.
There are total 45 seats in ‘GTA’. They are spread over Kalimpong district and Darjeeling, Mirik and Kurseong sub-divisions of Darjeeling district.
Polling is underway at 922 centres, out of which five have been identified as vulnerable, the official said.
Polling is underway in Siliguri in nine seats of Mahakuma Parishad (sub-divisional council), 22 panchayats and four panchayat samitis.
By-elections are also going on in six wards of six municipalities of the state.
Polling is underway in Ward-2 of Jhalda Municipality in Purulia. Congress councilor Tapan Kandu was shot dead here in March.
Polling is also being held in Ward-8 of Panihati Municipality of North 24 Parganas district. Trinamool Congress (TMC) councilor Anupam Dutta was shot dead here.
Voting is going on in Ward-3 of Bhatpara Municipality, Ward-16 of Chandannagar Municipality and Ward-4 of Dumdum Municipality. In each of these wards, one candidate had died before the elections in February.
Voting is also going on in Ward-29 of Dakshin Dum Dum Municipality.
